Festivals: Now available on iTunes app store

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

It took a lot of excitement, a lot of frustration and a lot of hard work to write an app for iPhone and bring it to app store. Its available free starting today and here is the itunes link where you can download it and install it on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Lerarning Objective-C wasn’t that hard. Conceptually I learned it quickly but when it came to coding, my Java syntax habits were difficult to break. It took a lil time to get handy with cocoa-touch framework, but I am still struggling with memory management and pointers. Its a tough lesson to learn since Java uses garbage collection and its developer hardly thinks about releasing memory.

This is my first app for iPhone. It shows list of all festivals celebrated in the world which are sorted by major world religions. When you drill down to a religion, you get list of all festivals and when you drill down further, you get details about the festival, including legends connected with the particular festival, way of celebration, rituals etc. It also shows dates for the festival in year 2008 and 2009. Overall it has very limited usage but its fun app to play with.

This is the support site for this app. http://www.eknathkadam.com/festivals/

My Favorite iPhone apps so far

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Its been a week I am playing with my iPhone. Installing new apps (mostly free) and testing how they work. So far I have found few amazing apps which which use iPhone’s full potential.
Palringo
1. Palringo Instant Messanger: Lets you login into yahoo, gtalk, msn, aim, ichat and many more IM services. One can send voice messages, pictures and text. Interface is pretty cool and intuitive.

Pad
2. PAD: Excessive use of mouse can lead to Carpal tunnel syndrome, using a trackpad instead of mouse helps a bit. Pad lets you use your iPhone as trackpad. The app is still far from perfection but basic mouse functions like click, double click, scrolling, right click work really well. Drag function is still buggy, but overall its a good app for $0.99. And yes, You can also use it as keyboard!

Pad
3.Tris: I generally do not like computer games, but once in while I play some simple game. Tris is a classic falling block game. I get hooked to it once in while and cant manage to stop playing it. So far my highest score is 3500. It uses touch gestures nicely.

Wordpress
4.Wordpress: They made it simple and easy. I like it for its simplicity.

Wordpress
5. Mocha VNC Lite: There are some cool apps which use wifi for remotely accessing your computer thru SSH, or controlling you iTunes and so on. Mocha VNC lets you control your full desktop. Over wifi its pretty fast. Mouse functions are still lil buggy. But zoom and other features are pretty good.
