Apple Innovates, World Copies

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Why is that Apple has to innovate and world has to copy ?

Apple brought graphical user interface with mouse to the world and windows copied it.

We, kinda had accepted that computers had to look ugly with big monitor and big tower, but  Apple broke the trend way back in 1998 by introducing all-in-one iMac. It took whole industry 10 years to copy that All-in-one style and still couldn’t do it as good as Apple.

Evolution of iMac, the All-in-one computer

Apple was first to introduce slot loading CD drive, inbuilt microphone, in build web-cam and inbuilt speakers inside mac as well as its laptop line. Rest of the industry is still catching up to bring all these features ‘inbuilt’.

Whole industry thought that computers cannot be beautiful. Apple has shown thats wrong by building multi-coloured imac since 1998. Industry, again, copied it.

Here is the latest version of iMac and rest of the industry trying to copy it.

Then came the iPod and iTunes. Nobody ever thought listening music on MP3 player could be so enjoyable and glamorous.Rest of the industry cant figure out how to just get these things right and leaves apple alone to become No.1 music retailer in US. Microsoft’s copy, Zune is declining in sales. Creatives Zen and many others are trying hard to get small pie of Apple’s iPod share.

Apple is trying to re-invent the TV. Apple TV is going in that direction. Now you can rent movies through your Apple TV and watch them on you big screen TV. As soon as Apple revealed Apple TV, Blockbuster woke up and jumped with Netflix player and Netgear with Netgear DIGITAL ENTERTAINER HD. And both of them look really ugly infron of Apple TV.

Few years ago when networking went wireless, wireless routers came into picture. Everybody accepted that a router has to look ugly with its horn-like antennas. But not Apple.

Apple brought in Airport and it looks gorgeous. Rest of the Industry is still trying hard, to get rid of the horns.

And finally came the iPhone. Before iPhone, there were phones, apart from making calls, you could use them to browse internet, access GPS, watch videos, see and take pictures and listen to music. And nothing really worked well. They were slow. Internet pages looked weird. Music didnt sound well. GPS was there for just names sake. With iPhone, the phone industry leap-frogged 10 years ahead. Now everyone is coming with large, touch screen, virtual keyboard phones. Look at iPhones competitors.

Windows counting its days

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

Windows is counting its days? you would ask are you nuts? MS has 80% + of market share, let it be their OS, or Office app or web browser, Microsoft has the monopoly.
But wait, their end is not too far, why, just look at these news.

IE 7’s market share is going down rapidly? Why cause WGA? If your copy of windows is not genuine then you will not get IE7 easily.
Since Vista sucks, so many people are asking for downgrade to XP. IE7 comes with Vista, but since Vista itself is not becoming popular IE7 suffers.

See this new here and here

If you have ever tried installing Vista and using it then you know the pain.
See this ad.

Or see more ads here

Or see the picture below.

So bottomline, Vista sucks and not everyone is jumping on it to get a copy.

Or have you seen office 2007? Man, its just too horrible!!! I wanted a simple office app, easy and intuitive. But Office 2007 is holy shit. They have changed whole look and feel and you struggle to find your fav icons which were always available right in front of you in older versions.

You would say people don’t have any other option but adopt these changes that MS is doing and suffer from it..ummmmmm….not quite right.
Those who are smart, are already moving away from Windows.
Just see this news

here

or see this picture here.

So many Java developers are already moving to Linux as their primary desktop OS. I was a Linux user for more than a year and used it as desktop OS and my experience was awesome.
So Linux, Firefox and OpenOffice can prove to be great alternative. And you wont have to pay a penny for any of them.

There is another big thing happening worldwide.
With iPod and iPhone, so many people are coming to know of a company called Apple. Not everyone who uses a computer know about Apple as they know only Microsoft.
So, so people now know that Apple doesn’t just make iPod and iPhones but is inventor and maker of a great product family called Mac. Though Apple was a winner when personnel computer revolution started, it lost big time when Steve Jobs left Apple. It was almost bankrupt until Steve came back and made significant changes in the whole business model and product family.

So, there is a big and beautiful thing called Mac and the OS X, the OS thats installed on all computers of Mac family. And they are far ahead of Windows and Linux.
The GUI is super excellent. You will just love it. Its Unix based so It doesn’t suffer from viruses like Windows do. So its as secure and stable as any other Unix OS. It comes along with all the fun and productivity softwares like iPhoto, iWeb, IMovie, iDVD, iTunes, Java, mail and all your favorite Unix utilities. Its amazing, its awesome. It doesnt matter if you are programmer, a multimedia professional or just a home user, OS X is the perfect OS.
The only problem is, you cant install OS X on your PC. Cause its not made for IBM PC. You have to buy their hardware (iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Book, Mac Book Pro or Mac Mini) to use this OS.
And that has been one of the reason why they are not popular all over the world. They are quite expensive, but if you compare the price with the features then you will think its worth spending those bucks. And above all Mac hardware is just as awesome as iPod and iPhone. Loot at this comparison between iMac (Apple’s Desktop Computer) and a Dell desktop.

So, Mac is becoming popular everyday. With iPod and iPhone, so many new people are interested in Mac and OS X. iTunes, the media software on OS X is gaining rapid popularity against Windows Media Player. Cause iTunes is the primary software to control your iPod, iPhone and manage your music library.

Since Safari, the web-browser on Mac, is also now available for windows, its gaining fast popularity. And the default browser for iPhone is, of course, Safari. So I dont wonder if Safari and Firefox together soon beat IE market share.

With Apple products, people are now becoming quality conscious when they think about buying a computer. Till yesterday, for most of computer users, windows was synonymous to personal computer, but now Mac is gaining the momentum.
For all those users, who have no choice but use MS Office, there is way to do that on Mac. MS office is available on Mac. And since Mac is based on Intel Platform, you can always install Windows on your Mac.
Either use Bootcamp to make your Mac dual boot.
Or use Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to use Windows as Virtual Machine. Look at this video about how easy it is to use Mac and Windows together.

My new love affair

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

MacBook Pro
After 5 years of marriage, last year I divorced Windows and married Linux. I was dating Linux on and off for quite some time. There were many reasons to fall in love with Linux. But again this was a Java Developer’s love. And Linux wasn’t a beautiful princess. It was great working on Linux, but it is the worst operating system as far as multimedia and GUI is concerned. I could never manage to run some video files, cause codecs weren’t available for Linux. As an at-work machine it worked perfectly great. Really fast and never behaved bizarre like Windows does. I got my hands dirty with some basic BASH scripting. IBM’s red books helped to easily migrate from Windows to Linux.

I quit Selectica and my marriage with Linux came to an end. At home I was still with Windows :). Because Windows makes everything work and I did not want to put Linux on my Laptop. It was again a routine life with Windows, just like most of the married couples in the world. I was already bored and seriously thinking of divorce once for all, cause Mac was already on my mind. But it was very expensive. The Mac I wanted would not come below $2k.

Luckily enough I happened to go to US and 3 weeks assignment prolonged for 3 months. I had saved enough money to pursue my dream. I bought Mac-Book pro.
Configuration:
15.4″ Active Matrix LCD
2GB RAM
Mac OS X
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile
256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1600
120GB HDD
DVD/CD writer
Express Card Slot
2 Firewire ports
2 USB Ports
In Built
iSight
Bluetooth
Wireless Card
Microphone
Stereo Speakers
And my new love affair took off. Since then I am the happiest man. MacBook pro is the most beautiful laptop on this earth. And Mac OS X is the best operating system on this earth. What else can I say, I m totally engrossed in this new love affair.
About why is this the best operating system and why macbook pro is the best laptop, I will keep writing, so keep visiting.

Waiting for iPhone

Friday, January 26th, 2007

June 2007 is still 6 months away from now, and 2008 almost 12 month, iPhone would be the longest awaited consumer electronics product in the history. And its worth waiting for. “An iPod, a mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communication device. And these are not three different products. We call it the iPhone.” This is how Mr. Jobs introduced iPhone to the world. And I also agree that they are reinventing the mobile phone.

I downloaded 500MB keynote from bittorrent and its duration is almost 2 HRS. Steve Jobs thouroughly demos the new iPhone. And whats most intresting is the new user interface. Yes, they call it multi-touch screen. Its is so interesting to see why they call it multi-touch. So when you want to scroll through the music collection, how do you scroll it, you just move your finger top-to-bottom and the list scrolls. If you want to zoom a picture ? how do you do that ? you just put your two fingers on the screen and literally stretch it and the picture zooms in, so on and so forth. Unless you watch the keynote, you wouldnt get whay I am saying.

So again, after iPod Apple is ready to write another chapter in the history of consumer electronics, so keep watching ….

Murti lahan pan kirti mahan

Creativity has no limitations. If you are innovative enough money will follow without any extra efforts. I bought iPod a couple of months back and was very excited to write something about it. But that didn’t happen. Today I downloaded a free e-book published by iLounge then I couldn’t avoid the temptation to write something. After I had a look thru the book I was amazed to see how innovative people are. iPod is the most popular word in the world these days after the word f**k. I appreciate Steve Jobs for his amazing brain. When you would go through this eBook you would know, how this tiny iPod has created a huge industry around it and great revolution for music listeners. There are more than 900 iPod accessories sold in market today and their prices start from $1 to $900. Few of them are listed below.

Adapters and Cables - Data , Adapters and Cables - Indoor Power, Audio/Video Cables, Bluetooth Wireless, Camera, Adapters, Car Mounts, Car Power Chargers, Kits and Adapters, Cases - iPod 5G (with video), Cassette Tape Adapters, CD Ripping Services, Cleaners & Polishes, Clips and Cord Managers, FM Radio Receivers, Transmitters - Car Only, Headphones & In-Canal Earphones, Clips and Guards - iPod shuffle, Clock Radios, iTunes Phones, Microphones & Microphone Adapters, Remote Controls, Headphone Expanders, Software, Speakers, Stickers, Guards, and Film.

One just goes crazy while going through all these accessories. If you don’t have an iPod and at least one extra accessory, you feel like you are missing something :)
